A lot of entrepreneurs and bloggers are talking about how much they’re earning with affiliate marketing, but not many are peeling back the curtain and giving an inside look into all that goes into setting it up.
Well, we’re going to change that today by giving you an in-depth guide to getting started with affiliate marketing, no matter how much background knowledge you have on the subject.
What is affiliate marketing?
Affiliate marketing is a performance-based marketing model “that rewards its users for promoting its products and services to their network”.
Anyone with a computer can be an affiliate! Surprising, right? While affiliate marketing is open to virtually everyone, only a small percentage of people are actually successful at it.
Affiliate marketing is anything but new, and with Amazon affiliates being so popular if you haven’t at least heard of it your hiding under a rock.. It really can have a positive impact on your income as an entrepreneur.
Here are a few reasons why affiliate marketing might be worth adding your business model.
It helps you make money on products you’re already promoting
Are you absolutely obsessed with a book that teaches readers how to run a successful business and can’t stop talking about it? Maybe you find yourself always promoting a course because it helped you turn your business around.
No matter what you’re promoting, it’s only smart to research and see if there’s a way you can make a cut of what you’re already marketing. You’re doing free marketing for their products or services right now, but many companies are willing to pay you a cut of your efforts in exchange for promoting them.
When you first begin affiliate marketing and brainstorming which programs you want to be a part of, look at your archive of content to see what you’re already promoting. Then you have a strong place to start your research, and the affiliate marketing feel more authentic to your audience because they are already used to you promoting a certain brand.
It helps you come up with even more content ideas
Do you ever find yourself staring at a blank page, wondering what in the world you should write about? I’ve totally been there! Heck, it basically happens to me at least once a week.
If you’re not sure what you should cover next, think about what kind of product you want to market in a given month or week. It may be just what you need open your mind so you can start to brainstorm topics that can incorporate the affiliate link.
It takes little time to set up
If you think about how much time you take outlining your idea for a product, creating the content, and launching it, it’s easy to get overwhelmed.
With affiliate marketing, all you have to do is go to the website of your choice and sign up for an affiliate account. Most retailers and service providers have a dedicated “Affiliate” page on their website to help you get started quickly.
Most accounts take a few short minutes to set up. Simply choose a username and password, give them your email address and extra information, copy your affiliate link, and start inputting it into your content. It’s that simple!
How to start affiliate marketing
When you become an affiliate, you will share your unique affiliate link in hopes that others will click on it and make a purchase. This is called a conversion, which leads to you getting a set percentage of every sale, often called a commission.
Every product and service provider has a different commission, so it’s important to do your research to understand which products will be most worth it to you. Some have as high as 30% monthly recurring commissions (like ConvertKit and Leadpages) while others have set amounts or in-store credits you earn for every sale.
Choose the Right Affiliate Network or Programs.
Your affiliate marketing strategy is only as good as the products and service providers you decide to partner with. It’s important to think about what products will be the most relevant to your audience. It’s even better if they naturally fit within your niche.
There are lots of affiliate networks for whatever level you are at and no matter what niche you are in. Sharesale and Clickbank are some of my favorite. What you want to look for is an easy way to keep track of your referral income and your clicks so you can track your conversions.
Research and Select the Right Affiliate Products.
There are lots of different things to keep in mind when choosing an affiliate program or product. You want to be aware of the percentages you get and the payout rates. Its also good to keep an eye out for
If You Can Trying Buying the Product Before Promoting It.
You want to always make sure you have used the product before you start telling your followers who have placed their trust in you. Its also way easier to promote physical products if yuo have actually used them. It’s the same with digital products also. Taking a photo of yourself using the product always helps with conversions.
Take advantage of Social Media Marketing to Get More Traffic.
Using Pinterest to drive extra traffic to your product reviews or affiliate landing pages are a great way to get free extra traffic to your blog. To make affiliate marketing work you need to start driving traffic to your site or blog. When you are first starting your blog it is hard to get google to show your pages and posts in searches.
However Pinterest is a great way to share affiliate offers. Also if you have the swipe up feature on your instagram stories you can easily add an affiliate link to your stories.
If you do not have that feature yet then you can use your profile link with a strong CTA.
Keep track of conversions
At first this is not that hard. However this can get complicated once you add more than one affiliate network and a few affiliate products.
We’re all about making things easy around here, so here are a few of our best tips for simplifying your affiliate marketing strategy. Once you read through this guide, you’ll wonder why you didn’t get started sooner.

Brainstorm a list of topic ideas around the affiliate program
With a few affiliate programs in mind, you can start thinking about how you will incorporate them into your content. You can look back through your archive to see where they may fit, but we also recommend creating a list of ideas to cover in the future.
We’ll give you an example. If you were going to sign up for our affiliate program (which we totally hope you will!), you could create content on any of the following themes:
- Instagram marketing or social media marketing
- Creating a visual aesthetic with your content
- Storytelling with your brand online
- Using stock photography to grow your brand
There are so many possibilities and different places you could take each theme. Just in these four bullet points alone, you could create a quarter’s worth of content. Take some time to do a brainstorming session so you have ideas to pull from.
Create high quality content from your topic ideas
Now that you have a list of topic ideas, you can let yourself loose to start actually creating the content. Consider the different ways you can weave the affiliate link into your blog post without it coming off as too spammy. A few mentions will do!
If you can create graphics to make your content pop even more, that will help you optimize your content for affiliate sales as well.

If you are an overachiever like we are and want to go above and beyond, we suggest thinking about other kinds of content you can create to support your affiliate marketing strategy.
Instead of only creating a blog post, think about if you could create a full series to break down how you use the tool or how the product is a part of your routine. You could also add a free email course or challenge to the end of your blog post.
Maybe writing isn’t your thing and you’d rather share a video tutorial. That works too! Putting your affiliate link in your YouTube video description can be a great way to earn affiliate income.
In the most simple terms, think about how you can give your audience a high amount of value. This is what will increase your earnings because it raises your know-like-trust factor, which leads to more sales.
